Pray Against Your Flesh

More than once my Pastor McBay has commented that the hardest person to say no to is yourself. I submit that the hardest thing to pray against is your flesh.

Matthew 26:39: And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

Jesus never sinned before He received the body the Father and the Holy Spirit prepared for Him and He never sinned after He received His body.

Hebrews 4:15: For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Matthew 1:20: But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

Hebrews 10:5: Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

The millions of animal sacrifices made by the Israelites were insufficient to absorb the wages of their sin, which is death (Romans 6:23). Only the sinless Saviour could be paid the wages of our sin as our substitute.

Like our sinful flesh, the sinless flesh of Jesus did not want to die. Since the Lord Jesus saw fit to pray for the Father*s will instead of that of His SINLESS flesh, how much more should we pray for the Father*s will instead of the will of our SINFUL flesh?

Matthew 26:39: And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

The Apostle Paul said that he kept his body under. He must have asked God to help him with that. Indeed, when we pray sincerely as we are instructed thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil I submit that we are praying against our own flesh.

Only a person with a sinless flesh could afford to die and receive the wages of sin that those of us with sinful flesh have earned. No mortal man can keep his body under without the help of God.

Romans 7:24: O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

We too must pray against our flesh, we must pray to be delivered from the body of this death. Jesus prayer was answered and if we pray it sincerely our prayer will be answered too.
